Cindy Patrick

If I didn’t know better, I would think that Cindy hails from California. Her works remind me of middle-period David Hockney, mostly due, I’m sure, to the shared obsession with water or, more accurately, swimming pools. Like Hockney, she uses blocks of strong, distinct color to deliver the image.

This one is a bit of a departure from earlier water works in that the swimmer is quite clearly stationary: no flash trails of moving limbs in the water as we find so often in Cindy’s pieces. What on earth is going on here? What are the circular objects? What is he doing?

Another wonderful thing is the implied play of light and shadow beneath the surface of the water: on his legs, the round objects. I love the gently undulating mass of yellow to the left of the image, in the process of particulate disintegration.

  1. ethereal. suspended in space and time. playfully capturing the paradox of stillness within fluidity. despite, or perhaps because of it’s ephmeral core, it could serve as album art of groovy1970′s all the way to current day adele.

  2. Always love your work, Cindy, and this is no exception!

  3. Once again you delight and amaze the senses, Cindy. The figure that centers your image is almost iconic and the light play and saturation are uniquely yours. Wonderful piece. Really special.
